What NOT to put on your CV

Posted on 10 Sept 2024 by Cathy

When it comes to creating a CV, it's important to highlight your experience, skills, and accomplishments in a clear and concise manner. However, there are certain things that you should avoid including on your CV to ensure it is well-received by potential employers.

Here are some things you should not have on your CV:

1. Photo: In most countries, including Ireland, it is not legally required to include a photo on your CV. Including a photo can lead to unconscious bias, as employers may make assumptions based on your appearance. It's best to let your skills and experience speak for themselves.

2. Full address: While it's important to include your city or country on your CV, you should avoid including your full address. This information is not necessary for potential employers and can be a privacy concern.

3. Sliding scale for skills: When indicating proficiency levels for languages or software on your CV, opt for a clear and consistent scale like beginner, intermediate, or advanced rather than a sliding scale or a percentage. This makes it easier for employers to understand your level of expertise. To be honest, I would take it out if possible as we tend to be our own worst critics and could underappreciate our own expertise. Don't shoot yourself in the foot.

4. Contact details at the bottom of the page: Your contact details, including your phone number and email address, should be prominently displayed at the top of your CV. This makes it easy for potential employers to reach out to you.

5. Education at the top of the page: If you have significant work experience, it's best to highlight this at the top of your CV, rather than your education. Education should be listed towards the bottom of the page, especially if you are a seasoned professional.

6. Not following AI ATS friendly tips: Many companies now use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) to screen CVs before they reach a human recruiter. To ensure your CV is ATS-friendly, be sure to follow the tips in this blog.

By avoiding these common mistakes, you can create a strong and effective CV that highlights your skills and experience in the best possible light. Remember, your CV is often the first impression you make on a potential employer, so it's important to make sure it is professional and well-presented.
