Interviews 101: A Concise Guide

Posted on 6 Jan 2025 by Cathy

As a candidate, preparing for interviews can be a daunting task. Here are some tips to help you master the art of interviews!

1. Research the job requirements
Review the job description and identify the key responsibilities and skills required. This will help you tailor your answers to highlight relevant experiences and qualities.

2. Prepare behavioural-based examples
Behavioural-based questions are commonly used in interviews to assess a candidate's past experiences and skills. Take some time to reflect on your previous accomplishments, challenges, and how you handled them. Prepare specific examples that showcase your problem-solving abilities, teamwork skills, and ability to handle adversity. Use the STAR technique (Situation, Task, Action, Result) to structure your responses and provide a clear and concise explanation of the situation, the actions you took, and the positive results you achieved.

3. Highlight your problem-solving skills
Employers value candidates who have strong problem-solving skills. Be prepared to answer questions that require you to think critically and provide solutions to hypothetical situations or challenges related to the job. When answering such questions, demonstrate your ability to analyze the situation, consider different perspectives, and propose creative and practical solutions. It's important to explain your reasoning behind your solutions and show how you consider all relevant factors.

4. Emphasise cultural fit
Employers not only want to hire someone with the right skills but also someone who fits well within the company's culture. During the interview, showcase your values, beliefs, and work style that align with the organisation. Listen attentively to the interviewer's questions and frame your responses in a way that demonstrates your understanding and appreciation of their company culture. Share examples of how you've successfully worked in diverse teams or adapted to different work environments to highlight your adaptability and cultural fit.

5. Demonstrate self-awareness and a growth mindset
Employers seek candidates who are self-aware, open to learning, and willing to grow within the organisation. Be prepared to answer questions that ask about your strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement. Showcasing self-awareness and a willingness to improve not only demonstrates your desire for personal and professional growth but also highlights your ability to accept feedback and work on yourself. Be honest about your weaknesses and explain what steps you have taken or plan to take to overcome them.

Good luck with your interview!
